Artist Statement

My sculptural ceramic artwork is organic in design and is inspired by the ocean. The ocean has always been a safe haven to me, where I can relax and enjoy the smell and touch of the sand and the rolling waves. My work’s focus is on the coral reefs: on how intricately detailed rocks become the habitats for small organisms, the colors that derive from each living creature; the way the water carries the plants in great fluidity, and the overall shapes that each plant forms. A great deal of imagination goes into my artwork, along with studying and referring to photographic images of sea life.

I am influenced by a number of sources, from Jacques Cousteau’s literature to ocean advocate artists like underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, and ceramic artist Courtney Mattison.  Their work showcases the environmental sensitivity and endangered condition of our coral reefs and inspires my ceramic oceanic themed sculptures. A mutual understanding between the two worlds of art and the ocean has deepened my passion for conservation.

Because of my oceanography and environmental courses, I have learned a great deal about conservation, which is leading me to learn more about the ocean and finding ways to conserve the coral reefs. I want my work to create a discussion, to create the awareness that these gorgeous coral reefs will not be here for long if we do not stop the impact of pollution and global warming. Not only are these incredible reefs living creatures, they are habitats to millions of sea-bearing wildlife. I hope that my viewers take a long look at my pieces and are moved to help spread awareness and take action in saving the corals.
