Artist Statement

In my mind experiences are solidified by time spent observing my surroundings while in the company of others, be they my fellow students or strangers. I believe that a setting or experience does not truly resonate with me until it is released into my work. Rather than collect these moments and have them lost in my head, reliving them over and over, I choose to use them as the focal point of my work.

With my pastel drawings and oil paintings, I attempt to recreate the sensory experiences of the places and people I am surrounded by daily. It is a sort of documentation process, showing my respect and awareness of the life happening around me.

Transferring these ideas into my work embodies how important other people and my experiences with them are to me. The work takes the form of a sort of living, scattered visual journal, giving just enough to spark a new experience for the viewer, but leave some room for injection of their own similar experiences. Like me it is always watching, absorbing, and solidifying the importance I place on me, my fellow man, and our experiences.
