Artist Statement
Simplicity of form and truth to material is key to crafting beauty, and the core of my aesthetic vision. Combining natural diversity with simple, inorganic forms serves to enhance the visual impact of both. My focus on furniture as a medium stems from my belief that people should surround themselves with art during their day-to-day lives. There are no rules that say a table, chair, or chest of drawers can’t be every bit as interesting and engaging as a painting or sculpture. The same considerations given to decorative objects are equally valid criteria by which to evaluate those that are functional.
My process is part reflective, and part reductive. In order to create furniture that is both unique and useable, I first break down what has historically made similar pieces successful. Once I have a grasp on where they have succeeded, either functionally or aesthetically, I begin to construct my own designs. Furniture often includes established elements of design, and by identifying these trends, I can begin to experiment with them. Creating a successful piece for me involves synthesizing a new concept into an existing paradigm, without compromising on vision or function.
