Artist Statement
I am interested in the aspects of space; how a structure can occupy a space, how it can be altered, and how the viewer experiences the sculpture in the space. Working with minimal geometric structures allows me to use only what is necessary to affect the space. My sculptural forms are intentionally created with the viewer in mind and must be perceived from all sides to be understood completely. It is important for the audience to recognize what is presented in front of them is an object that is itself, a sculpture that is non objective.
By the use of structural materials such as steel, concrete, and wood, the sculpture is being described as a constructed structure rather than an object. The use of these specific materials has an intentional connection with the form and its presence in space. My methodology develops from a set of restrictions that emphasize the idea of changed repetition. This idea supports the fact that repetition cannot be achieved, however it can be related to by a similarity of the previous form. Therefore the continuing structure becomes altered in the process and is subject to permutation, which allows for a change of form. The relationship between the two or more separate forms must be recognized to understand how the sculpture retains the idea of changed repetition.
As humans, we always occupy the same spaces, either at home, work, school, or on the streets, not necessarily recognizing how these spaces affect us personally. We take them for granted as we are used to experiencing them daily and only recognize significant changes. With my sculptures, I want the viewer to notice the space, realize it, and experience it fully. My work is created for the viewer’s physical experience and not used as a cathartic vehicle. The sculpture only then truly becomes the means of affecting and changing the space; not an object that is representational.
