Artist Statement

Art is a part of my soul and an extension of who I am. I use photography as a means of self-expression. I create images for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me.  Photography allows me to explore fragments of life as an abstract form, and also to interact with people I would otherwise not be able to engage with.

My goal, as a photographer, is to use my camera to open an unexplored world, a place of curious self-expression, but also a world of new relationships, new chances, new beginnings, and most importantly, new stories.  My choice of subject comes from my interest in ideas about mystery, disillusion, and altered states of consciousness. I focus on capturing mood through light and composition. I am inspired to compose by the contrast of light and dark. Black and white photography allows me to capture light in a way that moves me, while at the same time the lack of color gives the photographs a melancholy feel, and a weight of history that’s free to any specific decade.

I find myself interested in the results of submersing myself in a story and recording my own reactions to it.  The photographs of the Senior Exhibition show originate from that immersion. This collection of work comes from my desire to explore the world and to create stories through imagery.
